Different sorts of rating scales have been created to present customer responses but the best and most generally used one is Likert scale.

What is Likert Scale?

Definition: A Likert scale is utilized by expert analyst and researchers to record the responses of respondents and is along these lines ideal for gathering client input. Likert scale, also known as satisfaction scale or rating scale, is a 5 or 7 point scale which gives customer option to express how much they satisfied or dissatisfied /agree or disagree with a particular statement related to your product, service or your company.

The Likert scale is not quite the same as different scales. It can be use where you want to do survey and collect the customer responses on rating scale of 1–5 or 1–7. Some examples of using are

· Company conducting survey to get customer feedback

· HR doing survey on a specific topic and collecting its employee’s responses.

· College wants to know about their services and wants the student’s opinions.

· Researchers wants to collect data on a specific topic from their target audience

· Organization wants to compare their product or service with their competitors in the market

How to create Likert Scale Chart in Google Sheets or MS Excel/Office 365?

Company in which Michael is working wants to know about how customers feel about their new launched product so Michael has been given a task from his manager to conduct a survey about this new product. Company is interested to know how its customers feels about new product so that they can handle issue if any at the early stage. Michael arranged a survey and sent it to customers through email so that they can provide him feedback. He picked a 5 Point Likert scale survey for his research since he wants customers to provide feedback effectively in no time.

He didn’t need his customers to offer long responses as this may be a mood killer keeping the customers from participating in the review. In around a month he got responses from most of the clients. He accumulated that information and put this in Google Sheets.

He installed ChartExpo for Google Sheets from the Google Store.

After Installing.

· First opened Google Sheets in Chrome program, tapped on Add-ons > ChartExpo > Open

· In case of Excel Go to Insert > My Apps > ChartExpo for Excel

· Click on the + sign to create new chart

· Then go to Specialized Survey Charts and afterward tapped on Likert Scale Chart.

· Select the Sheet Name on which you have data for Likert Chart. Click on Add new metric and then select the column which has the numerical values, in this case Participants.

· After selecting the metric first select the question column as a first dimension. In this case it is named as Question.

· Now it’s time to select the second dimension which is basically the rating scale of Likert Scale. In this case the column named as Rating.

· After selecting these 3 columns you can click on “Create Chart” button.

· You can Edit chart. Change font size, colors , chart size and do many more things with the chart to make it more

Insights:

After creating this beautiful visualization extracting information was piece of cake. First thing to understand is what each color represents so that you know what useful information you can extract from it. In the above visualization colors are as follows:

· 1 is represented by Red color

· 2 is represented by Pink color

· 3 is represented by Gray color

· 4 is represented by Light Green color

· 5 is represented by Dark Green color

The top bar shows the overall rating depending on the ratings of other question. The other 5 bars represent ratings on each question.

From the above chart Michael was able to identify a very important thing about product and that was in question number 4 which was “How easy to use product is?” The above Likert Scale Chart shows that everything about the product is on the positive side except its usage. Means the product is hard to use and that because less people to recommend it to others otherwise it was a good product on Price, Quality and working aspects.

The Likert Scale is useful in surveys where you do not want much time from customers and want the responses on 5 or 7 point scale. Likert Scale helps researchers to increase the response rate from customers as it is easy to give responses in this format.
